Windmill House is a true hidden gem, and a most unlikely option for Johannesburg lodgings. Once inside the small compound that is comprised of the guesthouse and gardens, there are very few reminders that you are in fact in Johannesburg. Rather, you will have to pinch yourself to remember you are not in a cottage deep in the English countryside. If it is a peaceful retreat you are seeking out in Jo’burg, it doesn’t get more serene than Windmill House.
With the tranquility also comes comfort and luxury. The three guest suites each sport their own slant on classic elegance. The stately furnishings, comfy bedding, and antiques dotted about the rooms, also give them a homely feel. The ‘at home’ vibe also continues to the common living and breakfast areas, which are certainly reminiscent of being in someone’s house rather than a guest-house.
The landscaped gardens which the house backs onto – where you will find the charming windmill the property is named after – are a wonderful place to stroll, or sit on a bench and have a quiet moment of contemplation.
Windmill House is located in Parkhurst which, although is geographically suburban, is actually one of the vibiest (and hippest) spots in town. A short walk and you will find yourself on 4th Avenue, home to great restaurants, shops and bars.
