Republic Bar and Grill
There is a rather tight knit group of people – some locals, some ‘repats’ (Ghanians who have recently repatriated), some expats – that make up the equivalent of Accra’s ‘hipster crowd’, and you can expect to find them on several nights of the week at The Republic Bar and Grill. Located in central Osu, just behind Osu Mall on Oxford Street, Republic is in our opinion the first bar in Accra that can genuinely be described as trendy.
The inside is reminiscent of a Soho (London) or East Village (NYC) music dive, with its bold red walls, flush with black and white photos of music greats of the 20th Century, except a touch more sleek. Outside there is a terrace, whose tables and chairs spill out onto the dusty street – and after dusk it is lit up with fairy lights. The music at Republic varies between the sounds of jazz, reggae, and hip hop, and on weekends they have a live DJ outside.
One of Republic’s selling points is its great drinks, more specifically the well mixed cocktails at affordable prices. The Mojitos are the best we’ve tried in Accra.
If you’re feeling peckish they also have easy, bar snack-esq food on the menu.
The bar is owned and run by two brothers, who are often found enjoying their own bar, mingling with the guests. Their vision and vibe are an attestation to Accra coming into its own, embracing a very particular cultural mix of stylish and ‘roots’ that distinguishes the city from some of its more glitzy counterparts.
