Luxury Hotel, Cape Town
Ellerman House is a strong contender for the finest boutique hotel in Africa. Although Cape Town is without a doubt home to many a worthy contestant, Ellerman comes up top in a number of categories, starting with location.
The setting is Bantry Bay, a stretch of prime coastline 10 minutes outside the centre of Cape Town, however a safe distance from the sometimes overcrowded Clifton Beach area. Bantry Bay is in fact a residential area (a prestigious one at that), and Ellerman blends in as another private property rather than a public hotel.
The building itself is a mansion which was once the home of a certain Sir and Lady Ellerman, and sports the Cape Edwardian architectural traits. The walls of the hotel are furnished with a vast collection of fine art – both classic and contemporary – including works by some of the most well-known artists in South Africa.
Ellerman’s chic pool and terrace area jut out on the cliff side with unparalleled views over both the city of Cape Town, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
The 13 rooms and 2 villas at Ellerman House are individually decorated, with no two the same. However, the general style is strictly classic, plush, and mature, reflecting the demographic of the clientele. There are however some more contemporary/cutting edge rooms to choose from. Many of the rooms have balconies – or better still, private terraces – with sea views.
Ellerman House takes its wining and dining very seriously, with an extremely elegant restaurant that serves a creative menu, made from mostly local organic produce. The hotel boasts its very own ‘wine gallery’, an impressive space showcasing a 7500 – strong collection of South African wines.
There is a prevailing undercurrent of privacy and exclusivity at Ellerman. During peak season, only in-house guests are permitted to enter the property.
